Writing articles is an ability that calls for other abilities. For instance, a writer has to understand the language he writes in, he needs to be intellectual in a sense to understand the cultural and political backgrounds of the issues he desires to write on. Moreover, a professional writer does not only know the language, but he selects relevant and exact words to describe the topic and other elements involved in.
Before a writer reaches his success represented in the result of his effect on other people; notably other authors and decision makers and a wide audience, he was a child who grew up in a certain environment, and he cares about writing maybe since his years in high school. Furthermore, a writer is a project that evolves through time, exactly the same as any other personality evolves. I said a “project” because we know that projects take time and need planning, and some skills like ability to select the relevant and the best.
I myself wanted one day to be a famous writer as well as a prominent physicist, but, unfortunately, it seems that I am far away from realizing that dream. I got BA in physics and soon the same degree in Linguistics, and I am something I am proud of. However, during my university studies I realized that being an author or a great physicist is not an easy peak to reach or to touch, because of what it requires in terms of necessary conditions like the environment and financial sources. Morocco is an underdeveloped country where graduated students search for jobs and where people generally need money to cover their basic needs. If you want to have your own house and car, you search for ways to get money; that is, you search for a job in the first job. Thus, the majority are not lucky to be physicists or famous writers because they do not invest their time in reading and writing or doing experiments.
If you can write good and professional articles, I believe that writing books and become prominent author will not seem hard anymore, but easy and even a hobby. And here comes an idea to my mind as I am writing now. The idea is that to write professional books you need first to write professional articles.
Articles are relatively short and they usually treat one topic, and if you master writing them, you are likely to be a good writer. Then what are the building blocks of good articles? I shall answer this question by identifying some:
- There must be a specific topic, not general and wide like “the meaning of life”! because the specific topic helps understand the issue you target and it enables you to list arguments that are directly related to the topic.
- Then choose a strategy to follow. Is your text going to be argumentative? Descriptive? Narrative?
- Your article is composed of paragraphs. Each paragraph should contain a topic sentence; that is, the sub topic the paragraph is about, and details that support your claims.
You also have to rake in consideration the side of language, given the fact that the topic of a sentence can be writing in many ways, or let’s say can be carried by many different sentences. The challenge here is to be able to choose the relevant and professional sentence in terms of the language, vocabulary, and figurative expressions.
